A recent psychology paper suggests that musical preferences can be broken down in general terms into five factors, termed by the authors "Mellow", "Unpretentious", "Sophisticated", "Intense", and "Contemporary" (named that way to generate the acronym MUSIC). It's an interesting way of looking at music for a DJ... what do you think?

What do you believe your preferences are? Mine probably run C-M-I-S-U, but it would be interesting to try the study.

I tend to be suspicious about anything that breaks a complex topic down into a simple, small (generally less than 10) set of categories with clever names. Whether they be 5 steps, or 7 habits, or whatever.

I read the paper... to the extent that I can follow the analysis, it actually seems pretty sensible. The authors don't pretend this to be the last word on musical preferences, I should note. It's my post that oversimplifies the issue, this being a blog and not a journal letter.
