Any of you folks have recommendations (or anti-recommendations) for professional movers?

Yes, we like our friends so much that we're getting professionals to help with the move.

I don't remember the specific people I used, but I have a couple of pointers: Use a big company.

I used a small independant mover the first time, and they were aweful. They berated me for packing the way I did, they were rude and they lost a decorative screw for a swivel mirror, but couldn't help me when I called to get it back.

The second time I used a larger company, franchise type thing, I think. The guys were much more professional and friendly, even if they did make a couple of questionable jokes about my sewing dummies. Everything was handled respectfully and they were efficient. Definately worth the extra cost compared to the independants.

I used Premier Van Lines, and they were colossal douchebags. They really ripped me off. They underestimated the time of the move by 6 hours. They misrepresented themselves and billing for packing. They broke a fair amount of stuff, and then told me they wouldn't be responsible since they didn't do the unpack (so what's the point of insurance?)

I have a friend who has used Two Small Men with Big hearts a few times with good results. They also have cash discounts, I'm told.

I'd heard good things in the scuttlebutt about 2SMwBH... thanks for the vote!

I really liked Fred Guy Moving, but I've also heard really negative things about them. My move was tiny tiny (out of on-campus residence, into a bedroom of a house... you can guess how much furniture I had) and I hit on the movers a lot so I think that helped. :P

Generally speaking, I would just agree with ilanikhan: Go with a larger company. Bit more expensive, perhaps, but you have more peace of mind. At least that's the logic I'll be using for my own upcoming move...

I can tell you that I've been most satisfied with "Déménagment Maximum", which do both sides of the river and both rivate and commercial movings.

In any case, please contact the equivalent the Ontario equivalent to the "Office de la protection du consommateur" (OPC): they will check àthe backgrounds and any potential company that you're thinking about.

Personnally, I've picked three (3) that had big adds in last year's yellow pages (they pay money for big ads in yellow pages, they didn't opened just last week and they've been in business long enough to understand that yellow pages pay on the long run), and I've checked the backgrounds to both the OPC and the Better Business Bureau (BBB)...
